Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery –celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said; “ It is not where you take things from—it's where you take them to.” --Jim Jarmusch (stolen from a friend's friend on FB- March 2009). I introduce to you Pearl and Limp Bizkit (aka William), my finished version of the Misfit Dolls.
Fighting inertia can be quite a battle. I long to spend time alone painting in my studio, but I benefit abundantly from interacting with other artists, learning, sharing, playing... The solution? Online art classes. Here's a link to my most recent discovery http://lanaguerra.ning.com/ ![]() I am taking a class online with maven doll-maker Lana Guerra. She makes a kind of lovely monstery being she calls 'misfit dolls.' All you need to get started is a bit of wire, masking tape and sculpey! Lana walks you through all the steps in funny little videos. And along with the information you get a good dose of acceptance and kindness for all things imperfect. I am loving the class, and I am loving the beings that are emerging too. Here's a current pic, and I'll document the finish product too! Thanks to Lana for these fun reminders too! ![]() My favorite blogs include a very healthy amount of images. Things big and small that help chronicle the day-to-day lives of their authors. I intend to chronicle my creative journey this year by posting a sampling of what is currently on my easel. Of the many active projects I now have, she is one of my favorites. I started drawing her in Uruguay a few weeks ago, and it's now found her way to the studio. Drawing on Canson paper sketched with Prismacolors. The truth is that I refused to get on the blogging bandwagon in 2007 when a friend suggested that 'it was the way to go,' with the same vehemence that I rejected getting a cell phone for years. Until I got a cell phone and within days I wondered how I had survived so long without one.
It is in the same tail-between-my-legs-way, that I start this my first blog post. You see, I come from a 'private' family --at least one of the branches of it is. We are forger-aheaders. We solve problems and make choices that make sense. We look for the silver lining and celebrate the hell out of it. We practice gratitude for all of the concrete blessings we experience and posses... But the emotional side of things is a little more "scant," to say it some way... Baring my soul is NOT something I enjoy doing, and it may be a chief reason for my becoming a therapist. I find transparency and vulnerability compelling. I admire a person's willingness and courage to go there and lean into it. But me, I am mostly fine. It was a few months ago that art, once again, pierced that stoically practical veneer and started to create an urgent need... |
